Extension with Polygel on Universal Forms

Step by step guide

In this guide, we show you step by step how to extend your nails with Polygel using Universal Forms. By using Universal Forms, you get full control over length and shape without relying on tips. At the same time, Polygel is easy to work with, as it does not run like other gel products, giving you time to shape the product.

    1. Prepare your nails

Before you start working with your Polygel, you need to prepare your nails. You can find our full guide on how to prep your nails in our guide universe. But if you are experienced in doing nails, you know the routine: Wash hands, cuticle pusher, trim, buff, wipe, PH-Bond, Primer. With the preparations done, let’s take a look at Polygel with form.

    2. Apply your Base Coat

Start by applying a thin layer of Base Coat to the nail. It is important that your Base Coat gets close to both the sides and the base of the nail without touching the skin around it. If you happen to touch the surrounding skin or your cuticles, you must remove it before curing the product. For this, you can use our Micro Brush dipped in Cleanser to remove the product. Cure the Base Coat in our UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds.

Note that the Base Coat leaves a sticky layer after curing – this is completely normal and must not be removed or touched. It is now time to apply a thin layer of your Base Coat to the nail. The Base Coat must cure in the UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds.

You can use all our Polygel products for extensions. At Nailster, we have Polygel in clear, in colors, with and without glitter.

    3. Place the form on the finger

After applying your Base Coat, take a form and remove the round center so you can easily tear the two sides apart along the marked dotted lines. Then place the form under your nail.

    4. Check the width of the form

When the form is placed under your nail, check the width of your nail compared to the form using the black lines.

Exactly where your natural nail ends in width, you can cut a small notch in the form. For this, you can use our Cuticle Scissors. These small notches make it easier to place the form correctly under the nail.

    5. Place the form under the nail

Now place the form on the finger so it aligns with the underside of your natural nail. Use the support wings to hold the form in place. It is important that there is no gap between the form and the base of your nail, but that they are aligned.

    6. Apply your Polygel

Now you are ready to apply Polygel. Do this by pressing a small amount of Polygel onto the spatula and placing the product directly on the natural nail. Because the product has a thicker consistency, it will not run in the same way as Liquid Builder Gel. This gives you plenty of time to shape the product.

To shape the product on the nail, use a brush and our Cleanser. Dip the brush into the Cleanser each time you feel the product starts to get a bit sticky.

It is important to make sure you do not touch the skin with Polygel. Shape the extension by pushing the product up toward the cuticle. Here, it is important not to use brush strokes, but instead dab the product until it has the right shape. Once you are satisfied with how it looks near the cuticle, continue working down the nail. Make sure the product is evenly distributed over the entire nail.

When you are happy with the shape and length, and have ensured that no Polygel has gotten onto the skin around the nail, the nail is ready to cure in the UV/LED lamp. Cure the nail in the UV/LED lamp for 90–120 seconds.

    7. Finish the extension

When the nail has cured, you can remove the form by gently pinching both sides and pulling it away from the nail in a downward motion. If you are not completely satisfied with the shape, you can easily add more Polygel on top, as long as you remember to cure the product for 90–120 seconds in our UV/LED lamp.

When you are satisfied with the thickness and length, it is time to file your nails into shape. For this, use our 100/180 grit nail file. Start by shaping the tip of the nail. The next step is to file the surface of the nail. Here, it is important not to file away too much product, as the nail may break if it becomes too thin.

This is why you need to file an apex. The apex is the highest point of the nail that reinforces and strengthens the durability of your extension. The apex should be placed in the middle of the nail, depending on the length of the extension, and when viewed from the side, it should appear as a gentle curve that tapers toward the tip.

To make the nail plate even, finish by buffing over the nail with our Buffer.

Now the extension itself is complete.

    9. Finish your nail

When your extension is complete, it’s time to apply either a Top Coat or a Gel Polish and then a Top Coat, depending on your desired look. When applying your Gel Polish or Top Coat, it is important to be careful so you avoid touching the skin with the product. Make sure to get as close to the cuticle and sides as possible without the product coming into contact with the skin. You can see how in our guide universe.

Once the product is applied, cure it in our UV/LED lamp for 60–90 seconds. Remember that every layer you apply must be cured in the UV/LED lamp for 60–90 seconds. And keep in mind the rule of thumb: Better four paper-thin layers than two thick ones!
